FORESTS ARE KEY TO SUPPORTING LIFE ON EARTH

People need forests. Saving forests is the only way to save ourselves. From the air we breathe, to water, medicine and other resources they provide, forests sustain lives. But our forests are disappearing. To ensure humanity survives, we have to stop cutting them down. When we protect our forests, we help create a healthier, more prosperous, and more productive planet, for everyone.

FORESTS MAKE LIFE POSSIBLE

More than 1.6 billion people (about 25 percent of the world's population) depend directly on forests for shelter, livelihoods, water and food.

FORESTS REGULATE THE CLIMATE

Worldwide, tropical forests can provide 30 percent of the solution to climate change.

FORESTS PROVIDE US WITH FRESH WATER

Protecting forests helps ensure a supply of safe, clean water for people and wildlife.

Amazonia — the forests and wetlands of the Amazon River basin and Guiana Shield in South America — is invaluable to human well-being. We need it to breathe, store carbon and provide critical medicines. The key to addressing climate change lies within the protection of these carbon rich forests. In fact, CI knows that protecting forests can provide more than 30% of the solution for climate change and support the livelihoods of millions of people.

Even with this knowledge, every year the planet loses an area of forest the size of Costa Rica. That is an incredible threat to people and nature.

Awareness of forest conservation is rapidly growing. We are in a moment in time where nations, policy-makers, companies and business leaders are recognizing the importance of effectively managing our forests and the communities that depend on them. At CI, we recognize that everyone on Earth needs healthy forests to thrive. CI strives to protect tropical forests around the world, working directly with the communities who live in, and depend on, these forests. Through science, policy and partnerships, we work to show that forests are worth more standing than cut down. Building on nearly 30 years of work in the Amazon, CI and its partners are leading the world’s largest tropical forest restoration.
